Paan Singh Tomar is a real life depiction of subedar Paan Singh Tomar, a seven-time
national champion athlete and Army jawan who became a dacoit. The direction of the
movie is a perfect blend of humour , tragedy and drama. It is truly an eminently enjoyable
film. The Protagonist played by Irffan Khan is a subedar born in the district of Morena.
Tomar was a seven-time national champion in steeplechase, a grueling athletic event where
participants jump over seven water hazards and 28 hurdles while running a distance of 3,000
metres and an Army Jawan too. Tomar is a simple man who gets into army for the love of
his motherland and gets into sports for the love of food. When his cousins get together to
seize his land, and when the local cops refuse to help him, Paan Singh is pushed against
the wall and is forced to turn into a dacoit. The movie shows how Tomar himself is part of
the feudal mindset in his own way. He prides in the fact that his uncles are outlaws and he
tells his coach not to abuse him. For him, that is unacceptable. He is a very bold and arrogant
man.

family suffers from land issues that his belief in the system shatters. The first half of the
movie plays out in flashback mode with Paan Singh narrating his life to a journalist.

The movie is well written; every character is finely portrayed and presented. Paan
singh’s development from an innocent sportsman to a hardened dacoit is the core of the
film.
The movie works because Irffan Khan makes Paan Singh Tomar come alive as an athlete,
as a husband and as a dacoit. This is a flawless performance from him. As his wife, Mahie
Gill comes up with a relatively mediocre performance. There is humour as well a moderate
chemistry in the romantic scenes between the two. The remainder of the cast has also made a
substantial contribution to the film .The camerawork is also commendable.
Overall Paan Singh Tomar is a superbly crafted film that underlines the connection of life,
sports and society.
